All foreign visitors entering Canada must show a valid passport or an alternative legal travel document ( In 2008 paasport is required). Some may be required to have visas to enter the country. A valid drivers license alone is not sufficient to prove citizenship. In general, a passport is the best document. U.S. citizens without a passport should bring their birth certificate as well as government issued photo identification for driving accros border in 2007, after use only passport.

Customs and Immigration officials from both the United States and Canada are now required inspect all vehicles, trains, buses and airlines for contraband and immigration purposes. Visitors or returning Canadian Citizens are required to know what documentation they need to cross the border (a driver's license is NOT sufficient) and what items cannot be taken across the border (such as certain plants and fruits). In general, U.S. and Canadian citizens should bring their birth certificate as well as government issued photo identification. Citizens from other countries, however, may need additional documentation and should check with the appropriate immigration office or their local consulate for visa and other relevant information.
